One of the first steps that you should do in order to start a website is to get a good domain name.

What is a domain name, anyway? A domain name is a unique name that identifies individual web sites on the Internet. It can be composed of the letters of the English alphabet, numbers 0-9 and hyphen (-). Each domain name has a suffix or what is called Top-Level Domain. The most common suffixes are .com, .net, .org and .info.

There are already millions of domain names nowadays. That is why it might be kind of hard to grab the domain name you want for your website. However, you should not fret and get discouraged, but rather try to be creative.

Here are some tips on how to pick a good domain name:

1. Check the availability of your preferred domain name first. It should be related to your content or should describe you as a blogger. A good domain checker can be found at Yahoo!.
2. Think about what your desired website will be about. Your domain name ideally would be the title of your website.
3. If the domain you want is not available, list as many words as you can that is close to your preferred name and is related to your site content.
4. Refrain from using words such as "sexy" and "seductive" because it might be mistaken as a porn site. ( No offense! )
5. Try different combinations of the words that you've listed. Make sure that those are short and easy to type, spell and remember.
  Example: fabandglam.com is easier to type, spell, and remember than fabulousandglamorous.com
6. Minimize the use of hyphens (-). Although you may have no choice but to use a hyphen in your desired domain name, remember that it is often forgotten by the visitor.
  Example: pinkyswear.com is no longer available and you want is so badly. so you use pinky-swear.com instead.
